Maritime Information Modelling and Processing

Aim

The main objective of this research group is to explore and develop computational spatial models for the integration, modelling and analysis of maritime data at different levels of scale and aggregation in space and time.
The application context is very much focused on the maritime domain and development of decision-aided systems, as well as their implementation in computational operational systems oriented to the monitoring and control of the maritime environment.

MOTIM research is based on a series of background expertise in underwater acoustics, signal processing, geographical information science and systems.
Amongst several research avenues to explore current research challenges addressed by MOTIM are as follows:
1 – Ontologies and spatio-temporal data models that will represent the static and dynamic properties of maritime information at different levels of scale and abstraction, from the observation to the representation levels;
2 – Methods and computational representations that will support the real-time integration, management and processing of maritime information at large, from the seabed to the coastal domains;
3 – Spatio-temporal models and simulation systems that will fit the dynamics of the maritime environment;
4 – Human-oriented interfaces and visualization systems for the representation and diffusion of maritime information.

MOTIM research activities are developed and organized under three research axis:
-*Maritime Data observation and processing
-*Maritime environment modelling
-*Maritime activities representation and simulation
